ONU Homecoming Weekend

Image
This weekend was Homecoming at Ohio Northern University, so there were many different events happening and the campus was very busy. One of my favorite Homecoming events every year is the ONU Homecoming Parade. The parade features many different clubs and organizations at Ohio Northern, such as Polar Paws, sororities and fraternities, as well as the Homecoming Court, President Melissa Baumann and our mascot Klondike. This year, I live-tweeted from the Homecoming Parade to keep my followers in the loop of what was happening during the parade. Ever since I was young, I have loved going to parades. Every year, my family would go to the same parade on the Fourth of July and it was always a fun tradition for us to look forward to every year. My high school also had a Homecoming Parade every year that also included many fun carnival games, bouncy houses and food. Parades have always been a fun part of my childhood, so anytime I have the chance to go to a parade now I always go. The rest of H...

College Friendships

Image
When I first came to college my freshman year, I was so worried about making new friends. I had always heard that the friends you made the first weekend of college you most likely will not stay friends with, so I was convinced anyone I met I wouldn't stay friends with. But little did I know, I was going to meet my now-roommate Anna. We met during a walking tour of Ada, went to Starbucks afterwards and we have been friends ever since. Everyone else that I met Welcome Weekend I'm not friends with anymore, but me and Anna have stayed friends through many different friend groups.  One of my favorite memories with her and our a few of our other friends was a night one weekend freshman year when we went to Chick-Fil-A for supper, got ice cream from Dairy B's in Ada and then had a dance party in the Kerscher Stadium parking lot while watching the sunset. It's crazy how such a random night can turn into one of the best memories. Anna and I were then roommates sophomore year and...

5 Tips for Marketing with Facebook

Image
Although many people think Facebook is losing its popularity, it remains the #1 most used social media platform with 3.05 billion monthly active users. Of those 3.05 billion, 64.1% visit Facebook daily and 42.2% visit several times per day. So, if you are a brand or company looking to reach a large number of people on social media, Facebook is where you want to start. Creating and maintaining a Facebook account may seem like a fairly simple task, but there is a lot more that goes into it than you may originally think. To help you, here are 5 tips for marketing with Facebook. 1. Establish a Voice and Be Authentic In order to be successful on Facebook, a brand must establish a consistent voice on social media that follows their brand values and speaks to its target audience. A theme park's social media posts can be more fun and upbeat, but an accounting firm's voice may be more formal and informative. It is also important to be authentic with your audience and share content you t...

America's Pastime or America's Waste of Time?

Image
On Sunday, I went to Detroit to watch my favorite Major League Baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. This was the second Orioles game I was able to go to this year and it was fun, even though they have lost both of the games I went to. I went with parents, brother, sister and some family friends, so we had a good time.  Even though the game was a Sunday afternoon with amazing weather, there was not as many people there as I thought there would be. Granted, the Tigers aren't the best team, but there's usually a pretty good crowd at weekend games. This got me thinking about how many people don't enjoy going to baseball games anymore, especially because many people think the games are too long. I am a sport management major so, obviously, I love sports. My campus job is literally just watching and writing about sports. So, for me, sitting through a three-hour baseball game where nothing seems to be happening doesn't seem like a waste of time, but many people think it is. L...

3 Reasons Why Companies Should Use Social Media Advertising

Image
Social media advertising is becoming increasingly popular among companies in today's day and age. These companies are reverting from traditional media advertising, such as newspapers, magazines, radios and billboards to digital and social media. There are many reasons why they are making this switch, but there are three main reasons why all companies should start using social media advertising. The first reason is that more people are now using digital media rather than traditional media. There are billions of people who actively use all kinds of digital media every day. How many people do you know that still read newspapers and magazines or listen to the radio? Probably not as many people as you know are actively on social media every day. In the United States, the average daily time spent with digital media has surpassed the time spent with traditional media. Therefore, it would make sense to use social media advertising rather than traditional media advertising because you are r...

Busy Weekends in Ada

Image
With school now in full swing, my weekends are becoming very busy. Not only do I have to keep up with my homework, but I also have to work and try to have some fun! I started my weekend off at Bizbash on Friday night. Bizbash is a carnival celebration for students in the Dicke College of Business. There are carnival games, a dunk tank and free food. Although it was raining on Friday, we were still able to host it and have a good time. After Bizbash I worked the men's soccer game. We won 2-1 and the sunset was gorgeous, so it was a great night! Ada always has the best sunsets, especially from the press box at Kerscher Stadium! Friday night and Saturday morning were spent catching up on homework. Saturday afternoon I went to Ohio Northern's first football game. We played great and won 45-7, so it was really fun to watch! The men's soccer team had another game on Saturday night, so I had to work that as well. We got another win, this time 5-1, so it was another enjoyable game....

Social Media in the Sports Industry

Image
Social media is continuing to grow and spread across many different industries and platforms. One of the industries that I have seen this the most is the sports industry. You see more and more teams hiring people, mainly from the younger generation, to run their social media accounts. This allows the teams and players to get more exposure because they are up to date on the latest social media trends. In order to dive deeper into how social media is affecting the sports industry, I made a podcast where I interviewed my friend, Quinton Fesq, who works full time for Empire Sports Media, which is a company in New York that covers New York sports teams. He is a video editor for their podcast as well as their TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and X accounts. You can find the full podcast here . My first question for Quinton was what impact he has seen social media have on the sports industry from what he has experienced in his job so far. One impact he has seen that he thinks will contin...

Football and Soccer and Concerts, Oh My!

Image
This weekend was definitely one for the books. On Sunday, I went to my second concert in a month, which was also my second concert ever. My friends and I went to see Pitbull at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. T-Pain opened for him, so between the two it was a very thrilling, high-energy night! I love all of Pitbull's songs, but I think if I had to choose my favorite one to hear live, I would choose Fireball. I was also able to go home on Friday night to see my little brother, Jacob's first football game of the season. He is a senior in high school this year, so I want to try to get home to see more of his games than I did last year. The game started off rough, but they were able to come from behind and get the win! He is the quarterback this year and every single touchdown we scored was a passing or rushing touchdown by him. He is hoping to go on to play football in college, so I'm hoping the rest of his year goes as well as Friday night! On Saturday, I went...

Why Blogs Will Upgrade Your Marketing Strategies

Image
When I think of a blog, the first thing that comes to mind is the Disney show "Dog with a Blog." The show is exactly what it sounds like, a family adopts a dog named Stan, and the siblings soon find out that he can talk and write. He kept a blog that included stories about the daily life of his family, and usually had some sort of life lesson that the kids had learned that day. While this is an entertaining show for kids, blogs can be used for much more than just writing about your everyday life. The first blog was created in 1994 by a college student named Justin Hall. In his blog, he shared his thoughts, opinions and photos from his personal life. After that, the popularity of blogs soared, and as a result, millions of people are now writing and reading blogs of all kinds. In fact, 77% of internet users read blogs. The reason is because you can find blogs about anything from arts and crafts to politics and education. The top 5 most popular types of blogs today are fashion, ...

Unplugged

Image
In our generation, a majority of people have never truly been unplugged from their phones. In fact, according to the book, most of the people between the age of 18 and 44 who own a phone can't recall the last time that their phone wasn't right next to them. Do you remember the last time you turned off your phone or just left it at home? There are 8.08 billion people in the world, and 5.61 billion of those people have phones. That is 69.4% of the population, and honestly, I thought it would be more. It seems like everyone has a phone nowadays, even elementary school kids. I did not get a phone until I was a freshman in high school, and I always felt like I was the only one in the world without a phone. Now, I can't imagine my life without one. Have time to kill before I need to go somewhere? I can just scroll through TikTok. Need to tell someone something? I can just text them instead of waiting until I see them next. Just thinking about going somewhere or doing something wi...
