Growing up with Softball
One of the clubs that I am a part of at ONU is the Club Softball Team. The club just restarted last year and I decided to join because I loved playing softball in high school and I would be able to continue playing but in a more fun and laid-back way. Our first game of this semester was this past Sunday and although it was a long day, it was a lot of fun.
The game was at Kent State, which is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from ONU, so we needed to get an early start to the day. We had to leave campus by 6:45 and I am not a morning person, so the morning was not fun for me. However, when we got there, I was more awake and ready for the game. We always play doubleheaders and I played in the first game this time. I played third base, which is what I have been playing since elementary school softball. Most people hate playing third base but I love it. You always have to be ready because you are the closest to the batter and I love having that rush of adrenaline. Unfortunately, the game didn't end how we would have liked but I still enjoyed it.
Whenever I am playing softball, it always takes me back to my childhood. I especially feel this in club softball rather than competitive softball in high school because it feels more like a casual game with friends than a competition. My siblings and I played so many different sports together outside but softball was always one of my favorites. My dad would always pitch to each of us for hours on end. Looking back, he probably got tired of just watching us swing and miss most of the time but he always helped us and continued to do it no matter what.
My dad loves sports, so that was what we were watching on TV most of the time growing up and why we played so many sports outside. The main reason why I decided to major in sport management is because I have grown up with sports my whole life and I know I would not be the person I am today without them. When thinking about going to college, I struggled to pick my major because I didn't know what I wanted to do. But when I thought about what I loved, sports was always at the top of my list. Being able to reflect on these memories while playing a game I love with friends is always so fun!
Marissa, this sounds like so much fun! I'm sorry to hear that the game didn't end how you anticipated them but I think it's great that so many people participate in the club. I have a couple friends on Club Softball and they also seem to really enjoy it! I hope the rest of the year is great!
ReplyDeleteI think it's great you're still doing what you love!! It sounds like so much fun, and honestly I'm a little jealous! I was never coordinated enough to play sports, but I've always been involved with my friends whenever they had games throughout high school. One of my friends kept herself quite busy by playing basketball, volleyball, and softball all in one year in order to ensure she was playing a sport at all times!
